wrong time to be a director

Play will be good.
The following may sound like a letter, since it is.
I like — when I am directing to call actors over individually and talk to them (1 on 1). At that point I usually do the management sandwich– == I tell the person what I think they are doing right or well, then point out what I would like changed (and often why) and then I mention something else I like. I sort of did that with Casey, but it was in front of everyone. When you do it in front of everyone, they only remember the bad part, not the stuff you say good.
The worse thing about having to tell her stuff in front of everone is the fact that often everyone knows of which I speak. Casey has these nice little dance routines worked out, not what I wanted, but they work — and she put a lot of work into them. But she would end each of them by going up to a character and kind of humping their leg, not what she intended, but the end result. Because of the humping or just the ‘in your face’ aspect each time she did that the characters were uncomfortable and out of character. [In other words if some one did that in real life --- seemingly all the time --- there would be someone who would punch them out.] There is this weird thing about theatre, to work, is you have to have some parity. A simple example would be everyone has to talk loud, if any one doesn’t, they aren’t heard. Or if something is really funny, but detracts from the play, it has to be removed or it hurts the play.
It has to be in context. When I ask about North Country and the environment and if parents send their kids away to get rid of them, I want it to be in the context: “this is a perception have heard — that I may or may not believe, but I don’t buy into.” But I don’t want to polarize your answer, so you think I am being judgemental.
As I told Casey she created a really funny character with the dances, don’t lose that with some self-important bit of being in your face. Especially if that isn’t the root of the character.
I hope the characters want to impress the writer, but will do it in the bounds of what is acceptable.
I was trying to teach the director some, I mentioned to her that she was allowing committee direction. If someone couldn’t understand how to walk across the stage, about two other or more kids would make suggestions
When I told her she has to be the voice, she told me she wasn’t aware that it was happening. The reason to not let the inmates run the asylum is that after all is said and done, the actor doesn’t know what s/he is suppose to do.
For example, kids says she wants to look sexier. The director says, “I am not sure if you need to worry about that,” but two other kids say, “wear more mascara.” She is left with, should I wear mascara and look more sexy like I think I should, or should I not. She will wear mascara unless the director says, “no.”
hmmm enough rambling about that.
Decided to end the day with G&T, no exercise.
I made it past nap time, so maybe I can go to bed early and sleep some.
The tigers are off tonight and it is like a godsend. I would love to listen, but I would also like the numbers to even out
I wish I wasn’t so boring of late. Sorry.

Sweet Bingo Dingo, we are going to the play offs…well we have a 8-0 lead in the second….and if the lead holds up. This is every so sweet.
The wind here is amazing. Today started out nice, but windy. Warm, then about 3 p.m. a little rain storm.
Detroit Tigers win.
Play practice tonight. Go over the ending and have some fun…

First off Detroit Tigers are hammering the Royals 15-0 in the fourth. The Tigs have already started to put the B team in.
Productive day, though an easy day. I finished my play. and the Tigers are winning. Started exercising. Not that I have completely stopped, but I haven’t been very regular. I’ve done more crunches today, then all of the last week.
It has been a good day for all that —- very rainy. I thought of bringing my kayak, but the shoulder is still tender. I can lift my arm above my head though. Got a little nap in.
I like the ending of the play. Way too simple to solve, but I think it is all connected.

been lazy, I guess

Went to the book club in Lake Placid last night, that didn’t make me any less tired, though the Tigers won then after a lead against Baltimore today, they lost. Hopefully the Twins will not remove the 4-0 lead Boston has right now.
I need to finish the play. I have ideas, but no solutions. I guess I have the important things, who did it and sort of how the ending will take place, but all the info for the second act where the characters have to interact and point fingers….
got into one of those funny arguments you can only get into with a high school kid. A girl who is clearly a republican took offense to me asking a boy if he was thinking about going into the service. More to the point I asked him how he felt about fighting in Iraq. I say it ‘Eye - Rack’ she says ‘Eye - Rock’. I am not sure what her point was, but she jump into “I don’t know why you care about what he wants to do.” Which I think translates into — you shouldn’t bother him. I’ve had a couple kids echo this sentiment, but NEVER the kid who I was talking to.
What I enjoyed about the conversation was her argument with herself. That is she stated what my opinion was (wrongly) and how her opinion trumped that.
My favorite part of the conversation was when I said, “I am just expressing an opinion or thought… people are allowed to have opinions.” and she said, “O yes, well. You can have an opinion.” Which echoed a conservative sentiment I always feel. It is my believe that conservatives believe in the right of free speech, but only if the free speech comes from the ‘right.’
Been lazy with exercise. I walked a couple days ago, but other than that nothing. My shoulder — though better — isn’t ready for kayaking. I wouldn’t blame that on the sedentary lifestyle though.
Currently the Twins are in First place, but a loss will put them back in place. The Detroit Tigers really need to start making it happen. I have to figure a way to get the internet working here. I wasn’t going to go home until Sat. but if I have t his computer I can listen on cable to the game tomorrow. It’s sketchy right now.
I asked a dad to help me coach softball, he said he would, then said he needed to think about it. I think he will do it, one of his daughters said she was okay with it.
I have decided that no one should refer to the Angels as Los Angeles. If only because they play in Anaheim Stadium.
